No quick fix for childhood obesity
Canadians can't be proud about having achieved the fifth highest rate of childhood obesity in the world. Rather, it's a call to action.
But there's no quick fix, something that was made clear at the second annual Symposium on Conquering Childhood Obesity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], held last Friday at the University of Toronto Mississauga.
For this year's event,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], organizer Elvenia Gray-Sandiford said TransformNation took on several partners to put on the symposium. The list included Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel President and CEO Shari Lynn Ladanchuk,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mississauga MY Games founder and director Louroz Mercader,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and representatives from the East Mississauga Community Health Centre and the Social Planning Council of Peel.
TransformNation is the organization Sandiford founded to promote nutrition and activity among youth.
Sandiford said this year's symposium will result in a plan for moving forward in the battle against childhood obesity. The Social Planning Council of Peel was brought on board to help with that process,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Ward 3 Councillor Chris Fonseca,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], honourary chair of the symposium, said childhood obesity is preventable, but "all levels of government have to communicate.
"We have a lot of free programming and we have to take infrastructure and use it more effectively like libraries and schools," she said.
She also noted children often aren't allowed to walk to school or other places,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which would be healthy, because of concerns about their safety.
One member of the audience asked why snack bars at community centres sell french fries, soda pop and chocolate bars that are banned from school cafeterias.
Fonseca agreed that it looks like the City isn't practising what it preaches and promised to take the matter back to city council,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Panelist Jennifer Desmond,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a nurse who is president of Rexdale Rebuild Outreach Programs and Education (RROPE), said poverty makes it difficult for children to eat healthily. RROPE is a non-profit organization that provides education and programs to promote healthy lifestyles for women living in neighbouring Rexdale.
"I go into homes where both parents work and still can't afford proper food for themselves and their children," she said.
What makes it worse, she explained, is the addictive nature of foods that are high in fat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], salt and sugar.
"We have to go back to the social determinants of health," she said. Those social determinants are the social and economic factors that define how people live their income,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], social status, education, literacy and employment.
Lonni Meisner, a caseworker for Big Brothers Big Sisters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said the lack of affordable housing makes it more difficult for families to feed themselves and their children well.
"Childhood obesity isn't one issue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's broader that that, and includes housing and schools,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Meisner said.
Dr. Christopher Morgan, a chiropractor and president of Black Health Alliance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Canadians are very diverse, and it only makes sense to target different groups.
