Baseball: What are some of the strengths, and weaknesses, of having a salary cap in the MLB?
A salary cap in general, or the specific one they implemented?
The general goal of a salary cap is to create some semblance of economic parity between small-market teams (Royals,デュベティカアウトレット, Pirates) and large-market teams (New York Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers when they not owned by a couple in the midst of a divorce). Unlike the NFL where the national TV deal is the driving force and is equally shared, baseball has a substantial component driven by local TV revenue, and there are disparities in the local TV markets. (There is a national deal as well, but it doesn totally cancel the local disparities).
Let look at a really quick-and-dirty example:
Nationally, MLB just signed a 8 year, $12.4B package with various networks. Divided per year by 30 teams, duvetica jackets canada online, that about $52M per team per year. Locally, the Dodgers just signed a deal that averages out to about $240 million a year for local TV rights, whereas the Pittsburgh Pirates local deal is only about $18 million. So ignoring other revenues for the moment, the Dodgers get $292M and the Pirates get $70M. So one can see that the Dodgers could field a $100M payroll and still be making money hand over fist, whereas if the Pirates field a $100M lineup over an extended period,Duvetica Sale, their owner is standing outside PNC Park in one of those comical barrels with shoulder straps.
So in the simplest sense, a salary cap attempts to mitigate that difference by saying that you can only spend a certain amount on salaries. And it kinda-sorta work. (more)Loading.
Died of a cocaine overdose two days after being picked #2 overall in the 1986 NBA Draft. A lot of people were comparing him favorably with Jordan coming out of college, and OK. there was only one MJ and Bias was more of a power player than MJ, but Bias was definitely a talent, and was going to a great situation. The Boston Celtics were the defending champions, but happened to have gotten the #2 pick in a trade. It not too hard to imagine a situation where he learned the pro game under the wing of Bird,http://woolricheliteparka.blogspot.com/, McHale, Parrish, etc. He flunked out of high school, had no college offers, and got his girlfriend pregnant, so he had a child to raise.
2) One of the sources interviewed for the article still feels that a true high schooler would still be a once-in-a-generation thing because of the physical demands of the game -- the source (a high-school coach) suggested Herschel Walker and Marcus Dupree as the only players he felt could make the leap.
3) To think if the Clarett decision went differently, Adrian Peterson could been in the pros 3-4 years earlier -- he was dropping hints about what he do if someone offered him $5M,duvetica down jackets men, an. (more)Loading.
Why has Tim Tebow captured so much of the media/public attention,Duvetica Piumini?
There a few different groups meeting at a crossroads on the Tim Tebow issue,http://duveticashop.olimx.com/, but basically, there a disconnect between what we think we know about football, and what Tim Tebow is doing out there.
First there are the X and O football fans who are struggling to understand it all. There no question he a good locker room guy and seems to have a knack for leadership and being a good teammate -- the guys in the locker room love the guy. But when you look at the technical merits of his game, duvetica jackets canada online outlet duvetica down jackets men sale, there are plays where he looks like the Broncos plucked the local "Punt, Pass, and Kick" winner out of the crowd and suited him up. He not especially accurate. he doesn always throw a tight spiral. this OUGHT to be a recipe for disaster,Duvetica Down Jackets Duvetica Women for sale, yet it somehow working (in spurts, though they seem to crap the bed at least once a month). So football fans of all stripes want to see if he can keep it up until his technical skills raise to the level of his leadership skills, or if conventional wisdom will catch up to Denver and they have to go get a more "by the book" QB.
As a Part B to that that has nothing to do with Tebow himself, it defying conventional wisdom about what sorts of schemes will work in the NFL. For years,http://parajumpersonsalestores.blogspot.com/, whenever anyone suggested running the option as a primary offense in the NFL, the standard book was "well, NFL defenses are too strong and fast, it never work". And in today pass-happy NFL,Duvetica Coats, who would even try? So amongst football fans, part of it has n. (more)Loading.
Sports Business: Do NBA / NFL / MLB / NHL players earn anything from licensed sales of merchandise with their name / likeness used (such as jerseys)?
Short answer: nope.
I going to genericize the model a bit. each league has little differences, but they follow the same basic model. Basically, the league creates a marketing arm ("NFL Properties",デュベチカ 通販, "MLB Properties") which controls national licensing. The teams generally have limited use of their own logos for local advertising, but national deals with Pepsi and Budweiser and (relative to this question) Nike and Reebok are made at the league level. The profits from those deals are then shared equally among the teams.
So if your team sells 1000 LeBron jerseys at $100 (round numbers to keep it simple) and the whole rest of the league sells 1000 jerseys combined,http://duveticaouterwear.blogspot.com/, your team doesn get $100k,デュベティカダウンジャケット-デュベチカ(Duvetica)店舗-デュベティカアウトレット-デュベチカ 通販-デュベチカ専売店, they get $6667 ($200k / 30 teams). So there no motivation for the team to offer LeBron a cut of each jersey (even though I suppose they could) because they don get a proportional cut from the league anyway. Better to just offer him a little more base salary to reflect his marketability and take merch off the table entirely.
This model is why marquee players (particularly in basketball*) will want to
have an apparel deal of their own,Moncler Weste Billig Moncler Jacken Outlet Moncler Outlet Österreich, separate from league gear. Someone like Jordan or LeBron is allowed make his own deal with an apparel company to sell his own branded T-shirts and hats and shoes. And he can even use team colors (Jordan gear was always red-and-black), as long as he doesn use the team trademarks (logos).
