When K wears shoes she wears good ones like Ecco,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Stride Rite or Geox. She's never had any sort of orthotics but we did use a soft cork arch support. Having said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I personally think its important to give her lots of opportunity to go barefoot too. It's more of a mommy's instinct but feel that if her foot is always held in a certain position it is not going to excercise the muscles neccesary to hold her foot in that position by herself. We also encouraged lots of tippy toe standing to help build up the arch muscles.
We've had three different PTs tell us that our guy should split time between being barefoot and wearing supportive shoes. We have been told to avoid Robeez and shoes like them for shoe time. This is because bones and ligaments in children with Down Syndrome may set later than those of typically developing children. As a result,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a child who consistently has no support have flatter feet than one who wears supportive shoes. An appropriate shoe will have a sole that flexes at the ball of the foot and that has leather supports that begin at the sole at the back of the arch and run forward and up toward the bottom of the lace or velcro closure. The child should have a little bit of room at the toe of the shoe when standing. Barefoot time is important,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for the reasons that everyone mentioned. Without it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a child's muscles can't develop properly and the child might pronate for support. Robeez are alright if you have to do barefoot time in public where shoes are a must.
We do a mix of barefoot and supportive shoes from Stride Rite (though I admit she has a pair of Toms from Grandma plus a couple other sparkly tennis shoes and dress shoes from Grandma and her great aunt). When we went for an orthotics consult a couple months ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he told us to let her feet develop the muscles needed by a lot of barefoot and uneven walking and then using supportive shoes when out and about. (She did not need orthotics by the way so at least for her feet what we had been doing was working.)
Jett's ND says the opposite of Prof Hoffer's PTs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Kids develop arches from digging their toes into the floor during proper 4-point crawling (creeping),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Not during walking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Jett's SORSI practitioner (chiro/craniosacral) agrees. Shoe support/ortho support is not a real solution. He said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Throw them away."
Jett's ND recommends ONLY barefoot for walkers and crawlers. But I compromise w/the shoes I put on my shoe post. Really,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he only wears them when on his tricycle (so his toes/feet don't get caught) and if we go out to eat or something.
I struggled with this too as my first babe was in soft shoes like robeez and soft pedipeds for over 3 years. Ezra was barefoot until he was taking steps (just past 2 years) and then we went into stride rite shoes for the arch support,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it was then necessary for inserts just before 3 years. His ankles pronate and are very weak. PT is not a strong point for my boy and he still will not walk on gravel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], beach or nature trail with too many obsticals on it. If you have any concerns about your own health or the health of your child,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you should always consult with a physician or other healthcare professional.
