Babette Pinsky abode reflects staying power
Finding fashion designer 's North Beach home isn't easy, and a map will get you only so far. The route is a bit of a maze, leading from an alley to a narrow passageway that ends in a small communal garden.
Tucked into this enclave facing away from the street is Pinsky's 1920s so- called "wedding house,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," purportedly built to accommodate a newly married daughter of an old Italian family.
Ring the hanging dinner-bell-style chime in front, and Pinsky will appear. A resident here for nearly 30 years, Pinsky, 60, has watched bustling North Beach change around her.
The neighborhood changed from an Italian area to a more mixed one, with many Chinese people moving in. "We used to be able to hear the mah-jongg tiles clicking outside our window," Pinsky recalls fondly. Now the area is dominated by young professionals and families, she says, but has retained much of its Italian flavor.
The fashion world, too, has endured many trends in the 40 years that Pinsky has been designing women's sportswear. When she began her career in the early 1960s, black was verboten, and synthetics were stiff and stifling.
But Pinsky bucked tradition. She spent her first year out of design school in Scandinavia; fittingly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her first designs were "very clean and modern."
"It was the complete opposite to what was happening with the hippie movement," she says. "I used geometric,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sculptural forms in brighter colors like sunflower yellow and clear blue." Her lines were sold alongside Marimekko designs in cutting-edge stores like Design Research.
But Pinsky's real trademark is the pleat. In the mid-1980s, already established as a coat designer, Pinsky began to experiment with manipulating fabric to create textures and surfaces. The garments are folded and heat- treated to create permanent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], artful creases. When 's opened a Fifth Avenue store in 1991, the entire coat department was decked out with Pinsky's neon-colored pleated coats made for the occasion.
The success of her raincoats led to Pinsky's pleated sportswear, now the mainstay of her business. Fashioned from a synthetic microfabric specially made in Japan, Pinsky's pleated line centers on long, slimming skirts with neat knife pleats and blouses that are creatively crinkled. She works in dark, solid colors that are versatile and easy to mix and match.
It is a perfect marriage of form and function. Unlike older synthetics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "microfabric breathes well and is very comfortable, plus it drapes beautifully and is machine washable," she says.
Pinsky's minimalist style reflects her modernist sensibilities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], honed early on in Scandinavia. That same vision is seen in her home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where gentle geometry and natural wood define much of the two-bedroom duplex she shares with her husband and business partner, Steven Pinsky. The couple gutted the place in 1995, putting in up-to-date materials and custom built-ins. The loftlike 1,200- square-foot space has a spare yet cozy feel, with oak flooring. There is lots of natural light softened by simple rice paper window shades; handmade Navajo and Oriental rugs warm the rooms.
As for furnishings, Pinsky notes, "When we buy something we like,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it stays with us for a long time." A 30-year-old leather sofa from Design Research, worn to a mellow caramel color, anchors the downstairs sitting area. Opposite,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], two Hans Vegner carved wood and cane armchairs look classic and timeless next to a three-legged Alvo Altar side table. A beautiful, sculptural bentwood and cane lounger made by is in the upstairs sleeping area, a sunny space with a floor-to-ceiling view of the bay.
A measure of sleekness nicely offsets the wood furnishings. The open kitchen is anchored by a stainless steel island and countertops,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and features streamlined white wooden cabinets with brushed nickel hardware. The industrial- chic bathroom features a ruby red,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tiled shower enclosed by a sage-colored silk curtain, a curvy countertop fashioned from marine-grade composition board,
and brushed aluminum baseboards,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Pinsky's minimalist residence also reflects her love of craftsmanship. Her sitting room, outfitted with an old Ligne Rosset sofa bed from Limn and folk art posters, contains a collection of handmade baskets spanning American Indian, African and Australian cultures. "There is a simplicity and worldly sameness to them that I love,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she says. "Every culture weaves baskets with similar materials and uses. It's international."
A native of Long Island, Pinsky graduated from the in New York City in 1962. When she was a child, her mother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a glove designer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], taught her to sew her own clothes. "She was an artist and had great taste," Pinsky said.
After her year in Europe, Pinsky moved to San Francisco and has been here ever since. After a five-year stint running the gift store McDermott's in Sausalito with her former husband, Pinsky struck out on her own. She now has two Babette women's clothing stores in San Francisco; another will open this fall in San Jose.
One place where minimalism doesn't reign is Pinsky's closet. The full-size room holds copious clothes and accessories and is a museum of shoes. In her collection are yellow and purple polka-dotted slides by Christian La Croix, fire-engine red Armani slides and sculptured pumps in blue suede. Pinsky is also a huge Nike fan, and even has a pair of Nikes designed for Comme des Garcons. The footwear is stored in an open rack, on high shelves and in boxes.
