Cybersquatters wait in hope
Master of your domain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? Check before you run
No disrespect, says Pete Lucas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a fast-talking American who's "between jobs", but politicians don't particularly thrill him.
Would-be politicians may be wise, however, to pay Lucas attention - or,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as he'd prefer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], money. He's purchased domain names for as little as $US8 ($A11),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then resold them for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, he said.
"Don't I kind of destroy the myth of one man,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one vote?" Lucas asks rhetorically. "I guess I hold a little more power than the average person. He says he immediately registered "a few hundred" politically related domain names.
For every 100 sites he registers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], only between five and 10 ever pay significant dividends, he estimates. But those that do more than cover his expenses.
Lawyers often call him on behalf of prospective candidates to inquire about pricing, he said.
"You look years and years in advance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the hope is always there you'll hit it big,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Lucas said.
But the days of five- and six-digit jackpots may be ending,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says Michael Cornfield,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], research director for the Institute for Politics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Democracy and the Internet at George Washington University in Washington,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], DC.
"In a word, Google," he said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], referring to the uber-powerful search engine that accurately directs web surfers to candidates' official websites, no matter the site names. "Maybe I'll put up some caricatures,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], make fun of him. "But you could hardly read that long name on banners and on TV. Don't you think he would have raised even more millions if people could read the web address?"
