Council bans shorts as temperatures rise Local Gold Coast News,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
MORE than 1000 council workers will have to wear head-to-toe uniforms from next month,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a memo announcing the decision sent out to staff on the hottest day of summer.
Gold Coast City Council CEO Dale Dickson has stuck by his decision to implement the "sun protection" rule,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], saying the council could risk losing its self-insurance policy which saves ratepayers $1.25 million a year.
Mr Dickson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who recently trialled the new long-sleeve and long-pants uniform during a three-hour walk in the middle of the day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said a 2012 insurance external audit found the council had not assessed the risk or implemented controls for working in UV radiation.
"I road tested them and I was satisfied,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
About 1000 people will be forced to switch outfits -- a move endorsed by the Cancer Council -- at a cost to the council of $240,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000.
The new uniforms will be rolled out in February and feature the city new branding,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

"The critical part about this decision is the financial benefit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Mr Dickson.
"We risk losing $1.25 million a year if we don address it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
"We wanted to ensure our licence is renewed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"The one-off cost has to be weighed against costs that we would have incurred anyway and the savings (from the self-insurance policy),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
There are three exceptions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including lifeguards and when employees in the Catchment Management Unit and Design Branch take part in "in-water" activities.
According to the memo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the new mandatory procedure will apply to workers who are "continuously exposed to ultraviolet radiation for greater than 15 minutes to wear a long-sleeve collared shirt and full-length pants".
The lengthy memo points out that sun exposure has been identified as the cause of about 99 per cent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 95 per cent of melanomas in Australia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
