AirAsia X cheap flights from Adelaide to Asia
The airline was swamped with inquiries for its $199 one-way fare to Kuala Lumpur this week when it began daily flights from Sydney,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
It also flies to Darwin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Gold Coast,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Melbourne and Perth and last month flagged its interest in expanding its network in Australia.
Representatives from the South Australian Tourism Commission,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], other State Government departments and Adelaide Airport continue to try to attract new airlines to SA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tourism Minister Gail Gago said yesterday. "Discussions have taken place, and are open to continue, with a number of international carriers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including AirAsia X,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said.
"However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it would not be appropriate to speculate at this point about the outcome of those discussions."
Adelaide Airport Ltd sees Asia as a main potential to get more international carriers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The airport certainly has room to accommodate more flights.
"Adelaide Airport Ltd has had ongoing discussions with airlines that serve what we see as key near-term international markets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in particular East and South-East Asia and the (Middle-East) Gulf States,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," AAL managing director Mark Young said.
"We have more than enough capacity to cater for new international carriers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Our recent double-digit growth in passenger numbers shows there is significant demand for new services,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
Although the State Government would be delighted to see a new airline here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's understood AirAsia X is seeking more support than the Government is happy to provide, given that the policy is to seek high-yield international tourists ahead of those on low-fare carriers.
AirAsia X flies Airbus A330 twin-aisle aircraft to Australia, with few business-class seats and mostly economy seats. Its low-cost formula would mean more seats on an A330 than full-service airlines and so less legroom.
Adelaide Airport is serviced by six international carriers and, while flights have increased in recent years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the total is well under the ratio per population enjoyed by other Australian cities.
