It's all what you're used to eating. I know that.
I eat chicken, beef, fish,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], turkey and pork…but there's something about eating a cousin of my daughter's class pet, that kind of makes my stomach turn. Yet in Peru - which I recently visited - guinea pig is a delicacy.
My husband and I wandered across a festival at a church just outside Cusco and roasted/fried guinea pigs were everywhere. I could not bring myself to taste one but my husband did. He said it kind of tasted like dark meat chicken but with much less meat-to-bone ratio.
Guinea pig is not in our food database but a little research revealed that it's actually quite low in fat (and high in protein). If you've ever tried it, let us know!
At the age of 45, I bought my first bra.
Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], OK, that's not totally true. Over the years I bought the occasional sports bra,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], teen bra, yoga bra, camisole-with-bra-panel, cheap-bra-on-sale-for-$1.50 etc. I would mostly wear these when I shopped in places with communal dressing rooms; whenever I tried to wear them regularly, I would quickly become annoyed at how uncomfortable I was. I certainly never got one as a teenager. I am very small-chested. Not flat, but small. My whole life, it just seemed like, why bother? It only seemed to be a problem when I wore a shirt or dress with big armholes that could afford a view.
And then, two things happened. First, I gained some weight, and got a bit more of a chest. Not much, but it actually started to look sort of real to me. And then I read the following line from Tina Fey's Bossypants, about the advice she gives young women. Even if you don't think you need it, just…you know what? You're never going to regret it." And the world changed.
I marched myself down to the nearest fancy lingerie store, got a helpful salesperson, and bought a beautiful (if expensive) bra that does wonders for my figure. It was funny learning how to "work" a bra at my age. It took some time to figure out the whole hook-it-and-turn-it-around thing, to get the straps adjusted properly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and to just plain get used to wearing something under my clothes.
To everyone I've ever met, I now apologize for all the too-revealing tops. And I apologize to myself for not seeing my own body as "normal" enough for a bra, or myself as grown-up enough, either. Bring on more bras! What kind do you like? -- Rebecca Turner

A few weeks ago I moved from a 2nd floor elevator building to a 6th floor walk-up. I know,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's crazy - but our roof deck and the view we get from it was too good to pass up!
The day I moved in I walked up and down those six flights (182 stairs.
of course I counted!) seven times. SEVEN! That's up 1,274 and down 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],274 stairs in one day. Bear in mind the Empire State Building (which you can see from our rooftop) has 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],576 steps. I almost did the Empire State Run Up that day. I was impossibly sore afterwards but felt really good about having attacked that much exercise just by moving in. And then it hit me - I would have to walk up those 182 stairs at least once a day every day. But rather than look at it as a hindrance, I took it as a good thing. I'm literally forced to exercise at least for five minutes, climbing those stairs every single day. because of the holiday. So instead of missing my workout, I decided to scale and descend the stairs in my building 10 times to make up for it. My neighbors probably thought I was crazy, but at least I got my workout in.

Six weeks before the marathon! How am I doing? Really well. Really, REALLY well. I'm feeling strong and confident. My body is changing shape - I have muscles in my legs that I can actually see, and while my weight hasn't changed much, the inches have.
I've had a few mishaps along the way - last weekend was a doozy. My scheduled long run was "only" 12 miles on Saturday (I'd done 18 the week before!) and so I had a leisurely morning with my husband before heading out to the trails.
Of course, this extra time hanging around meant extra coffee. And even though I went to the bathroom about 15 times before I left, I still heard the call of nature after the first 2 miles. "No problem," I told myself. I'm no stranger to ducking behind a tree to take care of business. There are a few great spots by the side of the trail, up a slight bank and down the other side so no one can see.
But because of the recent flooding, the bank was cut off by a narrow stream. I eventually found an area where the stream had narrowed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], strided over, and planted my foot onto the bank. Except it kept going, literally INTO the bank, about a foot down into soft, gloppy mud. I put my hands out to steady myself and of course went elbow-deep. In went the other foot, having lost my balance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and while laughing and crying, I mentally kissed goodbye the remaining 10 miles of my run. As I lurched back to the car, feet made 5 pounds heavier by the mud and assorted nature detritus I was lugging with me, I smiled sheepishly at the amused-looking runners, smugly and drily passing me. I felt like Pigpen, and on top of everything, I still needed to pee. Not one of my better days.
Mishaps aside, This weekend: a 20-mile run on Saturday! So, here's my question: I'm getting bored of pasta for filling, comforting, high-carb foods. Any good, night-before-a-long-run ideas out there?

Someone recently gave me a package of wonton wrappers that they were not using so my kids and I decided to have some fun with them this weekend,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
We filled some with reduced-fat pesto sauce and part-skim ricotta, and others with all sorts of sugary-sweet combinations - melted chocolate and peanut butter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], crushed pretzels and chocolate chips,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dried cherries and mini marshmallows, to name a few - and baked them until crisp. They were so tasty and so easy and surprisingly low in PointsPlus values. A wonderful balance of creamy centers and crunchy outsides.
Here's how: Preheat oven to 450°F. Coat a nonstick baking sheet with cooking spray. Lay wonton wrappers on prepared sheet and place the filling of your choice in the middle of each wrapper - no more than about 1 Tbsp total. Fold the wrappers in half to form triangles and press down on the edges of each one to seal them. Coat with cooking spray and bake until crisp, rotating baking sheet once during cooking, about 5 to 8 minutes. Sprinkle dessert "wontons" with powdered sugar if desired.
I used to wear belts long ago. I had a thin white leather Espirit belt I bought for my freshman year of college; it was a very '80s accessory. Up into my 20s I wore with pride my collection of funky souvenir beaded belts ("Arizona" "California" "Disneyland"…do they even make those anymore?) I wore belts with baggy pants, and rolled-up jeans. But when I hit my 30s, belts fell off my radar. Belts on jackets, raincoats and dresses had always felt too spy-like or corporate, too Thomas Crown Affair for me. Give me something that's already fitted to my shape (why should a belt have to do the work?), or let things billow out comfortably. Plus, my hips began a march towards wideness, and a belt sitting atop them had the effect of dividing me into two people: the small one on the top and the larger one on the bottom.
But now that I've filled out a bit in the waist, a belt actually has something to do. It can finally cinch me! So now I love belts. The epiphany came when I bought a colorful 70s shirt-dress in my favorite vintage shop. The dress has a "self-belt." (Although I've always found that expression ridiculous. Does the belt belt itself?) Pulling the dress off the rack, I thought, "Eh, it has a belt. Belts and me, we don't get along." But amazingly, the belt, combined with the fabric and cut, made a neat, tailored silhouette. I looked great and got lots of compliments. I then rescued two lovely belts from their prison in my sock drawer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where they had languished for years. Both are beautiful leatherwork and look great with jeans and peasant blouses or t-shirts. The proportions are just right now. Yay, belts! Are there any fashion discoveries or rediscoveries you've recently made? -- Rebecca Turner
