As anyone who has one knows, one disadvantage of a roller bag is the generally IRREGULAR BOTTOM, related to the housing for the retractable push/pull handle. That I have filled with the three pair of underwear and two undershirts I need for my upcoming trip, then over that placed a pullover sweater. That then leaves a relatively FLAT space, into which goes a modified "bundle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," whose core is an 18-inch Eagle Creek shirt folder, at the moment with just three shirts in it, plus a tie. Wrapped around its shorter dimension are my dress slacks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the final layer of the bundle being a lightweight SPORTS COAT inside out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then FOLDED so that its middle drapes over the TOP EDGE of the shirt folder. The bag has a pocket of space left above the shoes, below the bundle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for my electric razor and toilet kit, and some other small items. I could have wrapped those two items in a bathing suit. The case still closes easily. There would be room for certainly another shirt, and if I get the lighter weight Sea to Summit folder, without any additional net weight, and even,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], another pair of pants. The lid of the case at the moment has my Kindle3 (though for a flight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that would go into my "personal" item),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with space for various other small items, chargers and the like. The outside zip pocket of the case would hold a windbreaker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which I leaving out for the upcoming urban trip. Total weight: 16.5 lbs. It would go a bit heavier with an extra pair of pants, a swimsuit, and a windbreaker, perhaps another 2.5 lbs.,19 lbs total, theoretically all I might need for a much longer trip. Anyway, I thought that the handling of the shoes and sport coat might be of interest, and the general pattern of packing should also work for my Osprey Porter 46,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], save it would be two pounds lighter.
You are absolutely correct - that channel is great for shoes and of course depends on the bag/handle dimensions and arrangement. Women shoes work great as well (unless they are 4" spike heels LOL). My "extra" shoes are flat ballerina flats which I fill with socks/hosiery and then face soles out, toe to heel, and rubber-band together and bag. This ends up as a very rectangular shape that fits in a bottom channel. to help build that a "pseudo" flat bottom. I fill each shoe again, bag each separately (I use plastic bread bags - not elegant but takes less space and weighs less). Note that each shoe has a more triangular shape than a man shoe - and the higher the heel - the sharper the angle. The top of the back of the shoe is higher than the shallow channel. So I put in each shoe sole down in the channel toe to toe and the move the heel of each shoe out to each edge of the suitcase - doesn matter that the top of the heel of the shoe is higher than the channel because it is along the side of the suitcase. This configuration leaves space in the middle for quarter packing cubes full of electronic cords or underwear etc. or a "tube" cube, or rolled item(s) to provide that "pseudo" flat bottom you are creating. Thanks for the tip on the sports coat. My husband usually wears his on the plane but sometimes I have to pack him a suit. How does having the jacket inside out help? I certain it does or you wouldn do it. Nice light weight for what you have packed in your roller! Whenever physical issues/trip type results in me using a roller,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I always forget how much more I can get in a non-roller!
"How does having the jacket inside out help?"One of the site editors a year or so ago posted a video on how to fold the coat inside out. What that does is protect the outside fabric of the jacket, particularly if it textured, like the wool-silk tweed I have packed for the upcoming trip, but especially, it exposes the much smoother inner lining,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which then provides some "glide" relative to the layer below, and above. How to use the channels. Bundle packing wasn popular then. As time passed, Magellans came out with a product that could be considered the first "packing cube." One side was flat and the other side had three long pockets that fit perfectly into the channels of carry-on sized wheel bags. These pockets zipped open and you could put socks, undies, t-shirts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc in each one. When used,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it left a flat bottom in the case. The concept was good only how much stuff did people take that could be folded and fit into the thin pockets. Lots of empty room. That probably why it no longer for sale. Airlines weren as strict then with size and weight because most people still checked luggage. Finding space in the overhead was easy since most people with carry-on rollers were airline personnel. My old Travelpro has a lot of mileage on it. I was glad to replace the bulky garment bag.
Repacking the bag for the trip home proved simple, only a few obvious modifications needed. I packed the used undershirts and underwear in the hotel plastic laundry bag, and placed it between the two shoes, each stuffed with the used socks. The shirts were refolded in bulk,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then the dress PANTS went around the folder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the JACKET back into its original position, both OUTSIDE of the shirt folder. It is much better to use the single 18-inch folder to organize and protect ALL of the dress clothes.
