British Estuary Fishing - The Bass
The Bass - Morone Labrax
The body of the Bass is long and tapers smoothly to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the tail, rather resembling a Salmon in shape. The blue-grey back with it metallic sheen has two dorsal fins, the one nearest the head being spiny or [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] spiky and the rear one having softer branched rays. These dorsal fins are a point of distinction between the Salmon and the Bass. The Salmon has only one true dorsal fin, its second one being an adipose projection with no spines or rays. The bass has a very large mouth, with sharp teeth, the gill covers are spiky and the cheeks scaled. The average weight is in the three to four pound range.?
The Black [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Bass – Micropterus [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Salmoides
The large mouthed Black Bass with its humped back rather resembles a Perch but differs in having a rear dorsal fin with its branched rays higher than the forward, spiky fin. Its body shape is deep but narrow, with an abrupt tapering towards the tail. In colour it is generally darker than the Perch, having a dark olive-brown back with paler sides and a silvery white [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] belly. A dark horizontal [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] stripe appears on each side. The mouth is large and down-turned with small bristly teeth. It has a rather small tail with hardly any fork. Not only the body but a large part of the head is scaled.
Bass Location
Whilst, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] a Bass should not strictly [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] be considered alongside freshwater fish such as the Barbel, they are indeed found in the estuaries of Southern and Eastern England. Although more common in or near sea water, Bass seem to have no particular [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] dislike of freshwater and often find their way several miles upstream.
Feeding Habits and Bass Fishing Baits
Good natural baits are crabs, prawns, ragworm, small fish and squid – one particular bait may be found to be particularly attractive to Bass at a [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] particular place and time for no obvious reasons. The are also willing to take traditional such as maggots, casters and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] worms as [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] well as artificial lures, such as plugs, spinners and both dry and wet flies.
Bass Fishing Tackle and Methods
Fishing tackle will vary according to the methods being used. For example in legering a long-casting [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] rod with a multiplying reel will give the best results using a two or three ounce fixed or sliding weight on fifteen to twenty pounds breaking strain monofilament line. In very rough water it may be more profitable to use a paternoster style rig, otherwise a sliding weight may be use stopped at a [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] swivel, from which a trace of about three feet [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] leads to the hook. Bass may also be taken by spinning with an artificial lure or live bait, where permitted.
