Why I Hate Shopping At The Mall Even Though I Work In Fashion
When most teenage girls go shopping at the mall with their parents, they look forward to those one or two hours of freedom where they get to run crazy through their favorite stores (and flirt with cute boys, of course!). But instead of spending my allowance at Charlotte Russe, Aeropostale or Claire's, you'd find me resting on a bench with an Auntie Anne's pretzel waiting for my mother to return at the designated time and place I had given her.
It's not that I don't enjoy finding a great deal or major purchase; however, I prefer retail on a less crowded scale. Translation: Online shopping and boutique stores.
For as far back as I can remember, a rush of anxiety would come over me as soon as I felt the frigid mall air conditioning or caught a whiff of the overly-vacuumed carpet. No matter how headache-inducing the experience, my aunts and cousins would be beaming in front of the department stores' lighting and signage boasting "50% off" or "Buy 1, Get 1 free."
My anti-mall stance may have started with my mom's need to order all school and play-clothes from the JCPenney catalog until age 15. But I still have yet to get excited about making my way through hoards of people and obtrusive kiosks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially when I can get my hands on a coveted item with a click of my mouse or assistance of a personal shopper.
I also have a short temper when it comes to rude mall employees. While it may not be everyone's career goal to constantly fold T-shirts, chase little kids between sale racks or dispute what exactly is on sale,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if you are unable to represent the clothing or beauty brand professionally (and preferably with a smile),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], stay out of my way. I can put in a customer service complaint faster than you can say sorry.
Another con that comes with shopping at the mall: Walking for what seems like an eternity. The layout is ideal for burning a few calories and mindlessly shedding pounds. Yet, I'd rather not trek a mile to get to the only store I'm interested in because parking was only available on the opposite side.
Bougie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? Never,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! Snobby? Maybe? But at least you won't find me sweating or vomiting over mobile shopping apps or in the fitting room at Zara,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The reason I hate to shop at the Malls is because they have NO shopping carts. I need a shopping cart just to hold my purse, let alone all the packages I bought.
I remember years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I had so many shopping bags with me when I stopped in a fine jewelry store,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I purchased a few gold chains,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an expensive watch. Unfortunately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most of them sell pretty much the same stuff as the next and so most of them need to get that neon cr*p out of their stores before I step inside again. The rest of them are just so obnoxiously pushy that I can't be in there for more than a few minutes. The only good thing about them is that at least around here they have to good sense to build the parking lots on both sides so you don't have to walk the whole thing and you can get in to where you need and then get back out fairly quickly. Boutiques are just way too pricy and snobby and I can't get into online shopping because what you see and what you get can be two VERY different things. Zappos is the only place I can stand buying from online.
Use to love malls just for the controlled environment (air conditioning in summer, heating in winter) for walking and to be able to window shop. But now that I have gotten older,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], find the mall most annoying. Seems you have to walk 1/2 a mile just to get into the mall. There are fewer benches to sit on when you need a rest. The prices of the few things I might buy are way too high. The food court tends to be overcrowded and/or messy. The clothes stores seem to be stocked for the younger crowd that are all size 0, 2, 4 or 6.
I no longer go to malls. The prices are very high (even so called "sale" prices) compared to what I'm used to.
Also scarves, gloves, belts, jewelry, sweaters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coats, the list goes on on. Also household goods: kitchen items, toasters at $3.00, blenders 4 or 5 dollars,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nice sets of dishes $10, pots pans $3 - $5. Once you start attending these sales,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you will be addicted to the fantastic bargains,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you won't even think of going to malls anymore.
