Why do something today when it can be left till tomorrow? It is the same thing every year: we wait until the last minute to buy our Christmas presents or pay our taxes. What is perhaps more surprising is that professional football clubs also behave in this way. For although the market opens for two months, many wait until its final hours to conclude their transfer deals, when major coups and bargain buys abound.
This Sunday, Argentina are playing a friendly against Brazil at Arsenal's new Emirates Stadium in London. On hearing they had been called up for this match, Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano could scarcely have thought they would be playing in their new place of residence. However, only a few hours before the transfer deadline elapsed, the two Albiceleste stars were snapped up from Corinthians by London club West Ham United.
"This is a fantastic day for West Ham," declared their manager Alan Pardew. "Of course I'm excited that Carlos and Javier are coming here, but so are the rest of the team. These new signings will allow us to compete with the best, not only in the Premier League, but also in Europe."
On the last day of August, the English capital was a veritable hotbed of wheeling and dealing. After protracted negotiations, Chelsea and Arsenal finally reached agreement overnight on an exchange between French defender William Gallas and England left back Ashley Cole.
London the place to be
Also in the English capital, Tottenham only finalised their recruitment as the clock ticked ever-closer to the fateful hour. After having completed the permanent transfer of the Egyptian Mido, who they loaned from AS Roma last season, Spurs have added a touch of je ne sais quoi to their squad in the shape of Frenchmen Steed Malbranque, signed from Fulham, and Wigan's Pascal Chimbonda, a surprise selection for Les Bleus' 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ squad.
England's provincial clubs have been busy too, with Middlesbrough rescuing Real Madrid's Jonathan Woodgate from two injury-plagued seasons at the Spanish giants, and German defender Robert Huth from the substitutes' bench at Chelsea. Portsmouth, for their part, have further swelled their foreign armada by adding the Croatian international Niko Kranjcar, along with the veteran striker Andrew Cole.
In the division below, new Sunderland coach Roy Keane made his first acquisition in his former Manchester United team-mate, Dwight Yorke. At the ripe old age of 35, the Trinidad and Tobago captain is going from one new challenge to another. After leading his country to their first FIFA World Cup and taking part in the FIFA Club World Championship Japan 2005 with FC Sydney, the former Red Devil now wants to help the Black Cats get back amongst the elite next season. "Sunderland may not be in the Premiership now, but we intend to take them back there," he declared on his arrival, citing 'the appointment of Roy Keane' as his main reason for joining the club.
Sorin makes it six
In France, the final hours of the transfer market confirmed a trend: the links between Paris Saint-German and Olympic Marseille are at their strongest on 31 August! After Fabrice Fiorese in 2004 and Lorik Cana in 2005, the Cameroonian buy sexy underwear defender Modeste M'Bami left the capital for the Mediterranean coast on deadline day.
Tired of warming the substitutes' bench at four-time league champions Lyon, the former OM player Benoit Pedretti has opted to relaunch his career at Auxerre. At Monaco, meanwhile, the final find of the summer brings added defensive strength in the shape of Argentine international Leandro Cufre. The quarter-finalist at Germany 2006 has left AS Roma for the Principality where he will join forces with two other new foreign recruits who featured in Germany: the towering Czech striker Jan Koller and Croatian plus size sexy lingerie midfielder Jerko Leko.
Another Argentine to have packed his bags on 31 August was the Albiceleste captain Juan Pablo Sorin. Having already graced the Argentine, Brazilian, Italian, French and Spanish leagues, he will now parade his flowing locks on German soil. 'Juanpi' has signed for Hamburg, with whom he will be back in the UEFA Champions League a few months after contesting the semi-final in the colours of Villarreal. "Sorin is the Argentinian captain and he has chosen Hamburg. That sends out a clear message to the whole Bundesliga," declared the club's coach Thomas Doll. "He's a professional who possesses incredible energy, which is just what our young team needs."
Oliveira succeeds Sheva
The Italian transfer soap opera of the last few days almost produced a return to Serie A for the Brazilian Ronaldo, with AC Milan first mooted as his destination, followed by Inter via a possible exchange with Adriano. In the end, the Rossoneri did secure Brazilian attacking reinforcements, but in the shape of Ricardo Oliveira.
The Auriverde international from Real Betis will have the tall order of filling the boots of Andriy Shevchenko at the San Siro. "That's not a problem for me. I'm a striker arriving at one of the best wholesale sexy lingerie clubs in the world," announced the Brazilian. "I understand the responsibilities involved, but it doesn't worry me." The Swiss midfielder Johann Vogel, meanwhile, moves in the opposite direction to the Andalusian club.
As one Brazilian arrives, another departs. Marcio Amoroso, who only wholesale authentic jerseys arrived last December, has made only a few starts for the Lombardian club and is returning to his homeland to play for Corinthians.
After several weeks of discussions in Spain, Real Madrid have finally secured the return of the young international Jose Antonio Reyes under a loan arrangement. After two seasons in an Arsenal shirt, the Arsenal left winger will once again prowl the pitches of la Liga, but one player he will not encounter there is his former Seville team-mate Julio Baptista, as the Brazilian has gone in the opposite direction as part of a swap deal.
Lastly, the Netherlands has also had its share of last-minute surprises. PSV Eindhoven capped their summer recruitment programme by securing the services of Liverpool's Dutch international defender Jan Kromkamp and striker Patrick Kluivert, the top scorer in the history of the Dutch national team who has nevertheless endured two disastrous spells with Newcastle and Valencia. The most notable departure from Dutch soil is the American DaMarcus Beasley, set to sample life in the English Premier League with Manchester City.
