As California attempts to fight its way out of the recession and 12 per cent-plus unemployment, the economy has received a significant boost from Down Under tourists, with new figures showing Australians are now the No.1 overseas visitors to Los Angeles.

The decision by two major airlines - Delta and V Australia - to compete with Qantas and United on the Australia-US routes brought cheaper airfares.
