Newbury Park won the Southern Section Division 1 championship in baseball last season behind the exploits of pitcher Luke Eubank,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who now pitching for a junior college in Nevada.
But don think the Panthers are going to suddenly fall off the radar,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and one reason for optimism is that Newbury Park is going to turn loose 6-foot-4 junior shortstop Zander Clarke. He showed his potential late last season. He got a two-run double against Santa Ana Mater Dei as the designated hitter in the semifinals.
The word is that Clarke has big-time ability. And so does his brother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Chris, who will be a 6-2 freshman pitcher on varsity. Somebody has tall genes in the family.
They be in good hands, because the returning catcher is Colton Waltner, a San Diego signee who was so good handling Eubank.
Alumni baseball games are starting to take place.
Simi Valley alumni game is Saturday at noon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], followed by a poker tournament in the evening (no word yet if Coach Matt La Belle is playing in either,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though he a Newbury Park grad).
Quartz Hill will play its alumni game on Feb,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Grant is having its alumni game on Feb,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. 9.
They held a baseball tournament championship game on Monday at the Urban Youth Academy in Compton,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Bell rallied to defeat San Fernando,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 5-4.
Bell has a new coach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], former assistant Mario Rosales. The Eagles got a complete game earlier in the tournament from senior pitcher Gabriel Ramos. Their top player could be sophomore shortstop Juan Delgado. Dyer is a 6-1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 180-pound senior. Both can throw close to 90 mph.
Of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Dana Hills will first have to deal with Aliso Niguel and San Clemente in the Sea View League.
Nick Suniga is one of the last former Van Nuys Montclair Prep baseball players who left school after the Mounties dropped their sports program.
He played his junior season at Mission Hills Alemany,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and now he ready to become Alemany ace in his senior year. He signed with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Suniga will be a key figure for a team that could have seven sophomores on varsity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including standout pitcher Kyle Merkel.
In a winter game on Saturday against Kennedy, Suniga showed he has a solid breaking pitch along with good velocity on his fastball. He also a top hitter.
