Flying high in Dubai
Like most young people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the QUT administration officer was looking for adventure and a way to travel.
Although she had never flown on Emirates, the former Lourdes Hill student had heard only good things about the airline. So she applied for a job as a member of the cabin crew,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and less than two months later she had packed her bags and was relocating to one of the world's most exciting cities.
That was 18 months ago, so when I caught up with Mahon for lunch at the upmarket Boardwalk restaurant on Dubai Creek, I asked her for the inside gossip on the city of merchants.
"I travelled to Europe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the US and Canada at 22 which gave me a taste for travel," she said. "I'd heard so much about Dubai and was very excited at the prospect of relocating here. Living here and travelling for a living has broadened my horizons and made me a more confident person. It has also made me more culturally sensitive and aware.
"It is important to respect the local culture in Dubai and dress modestly and behave accordingly."
And travel she does. Work has taken the 32-year-old to more than 80 countries. Her first flight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after a six-week training course, was from Dubai to Manila and in the week after we had lunch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mahon was off to London, Bangkok, Paris and Manchester.
"My favourite three destinations would be Malta, Vienna and Tanzania," she said. "Malta is a lovely island and Valletta, the capital,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is a Mediterranean gem."
But enough of other destinations, Mahon's job today is to give us some tips on the best Dubai has to offer . . .
Tastes of Dubai
You are spoilt for choice here. Just like the city's population,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the tastes of Dubai come from all corners of the Earth.
My favourite restaurant is Gordon Ramsay's Verre at the Hilton Dubai Creek (04 2127565). The food,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], service and ambience are fantastic. It's not cheap though. Dinner for two, including a bottle of wine, will cost 1600 dirhams ($565). It's up there with my favourite restaurants at home in Brisbane, Il Centro and Pier Nine.
For brunch, which is the thing to do on Fridays in Dubai, I love the Lime Tree Cafe (04 3498498) in Jumeirah. It's just back from the Mosque. If you are in a taxi, tell the driver it's near Spinney's supermarket. It is the best outdoor eating in Dubai.
When I just want a snack I'll grab a shawarma at a street food stall. It's very similar to a kebab. It's pita bread,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], grilled meat usually chicken or mutton with garlic, hommus and pickles. It's Dubai's fast food.
For an authentic Arabic feast try Bastakiah Nights in the heart of old Dubai (Bur Dubai) (04 3537772), it's fabulous. You can choose to either have a private dining room or sit on the rooftop under the stars with views of the Creek and a traditional mosque. It's fantastic Arabic food and you'll need a healthy appetite for the amount of food to be consumed.
Nightlife
A lot of bars in Dubai give a discount to Emirates flight cabin crew, which is really handy. My favourite bar is 360 Degrees (04 4068769) at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Located in the middle of the Gulf,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 360 is an open-rooftop bar with lounges creating a chilled-out atmosphere. It's a wonderful place to have a cocktail and take in the views across the Gulf, the Burj Al Arab,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Madinat and watch the sunset. Bookings essential.
Shopping
It's really hard to select favourites here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. There are so many to choose from. But for variety it would have to be the Mall of the Emirates (04 3403392) it even has the world's largest indoor ski slope. There are more than 350 shops including a mock Rodeo Drive and a 400-room hotel.
Closer to my home, I'd recommend Burjuman (04 3520222). It gets bigger every day. It is a real hot-spot for designer brands.
Dubai is a great place to buy clothes. From my point of view,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I get to try a lot of brands that we don't see in Australia. It is also a good place to buy gold, "rip-off" handbags and electronics. I've been buying art for my home in Coorparoo. When it comes to shopping at markets you have to bargain. If the starting price is 5000 dirhams, then I'd expect to get it for about 50 per cent or less. You have to start low and come in way under the asking price.
Spa therapy
I'm not really a spa girl. I don't go in for the massage thing. But working in this industry means I have to look as good as possible at all times,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. That means I get a lot of manicures and pedicures. For those I'd recommend The Rain Lounge in Bur Dubai,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. A full set will cost about 160 dirhams ($55) which is great value compared with Brisbane prices.
