Mountains
I was raised in Islington and both my parents were doctors. My mother died this past year. My father is really a neurologist as well as a mountaineer. He went on several expeditions because the doctor, including about the first successful British Everest expedition in 1975, led by Chris Bonington. Getting started
I developed my career in e-commerce making sure I had enough experience in various sectors to eventually do my very own thing. Astley Clarke stemmed from my passion for fine jewellery, and that i felt that a lot of luxury brands were slow to consider the web. I started with a business plan 4 years ago and hired a fine jewellery expert to get me up to speed. Then, working from my apartment, we built an internet site and met designers. We went live and from the first day there were orders, that was quite extraordinary. We're now a team of 22.
Picasso

In front it says, 'To Connie and Sigmund Seifert. Picasso.' These were friends who - I believe - met with the British Communist Party, which my grandparents were part of. Opera
With regards to music, I'm like an old lady: I listen simply to opera. My mother was a big opera fan so whenever there was music in our house it was opera. All opera reminds me of her. She was quite a dramatic person and at her funeral somebody said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 'Ruth loved opera and she lived her life as though she was in one.' I have to say, that was bang on. I'm not really a teary person but there was quite a lot of crying at her funeral.
Butterflies
Sir Cyril Astley Clarke,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my father's father, was a geneticist and president from the Royal College of Physicians,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he seemed to be a butterfly collector. Among the nice reasons for genetics and butterflies is that if you do genetic experiments with butterflies you can actually see the outcome in their wings. Through his research with butterflies he discovered the preventive treatment for rhesus haemolytic disease of newborn babies, an injection that is provided to women using a rhesus negative baby. He's saved a large number of babies' lives and was knighted for it, so us has this complete passion for butterflies (pictured). His house were built with a butterfly extension so there have been butterflies flying all over the house.
Exercise
Twice a week Como and I reluctantly go to the park to meet my own trainer, Dan, at 6.30am. It's cold and miserable and dark. We do lots of exercises and running up and down steps. Como is really a 'jackshit' - half Jack Russell, half shih-tzu. Como goes to Hyde Park the whole time. He owns it.
Edible pleasures
I really like cupcakes, especially these ones (pictured) made by Angel (
), which I retain in my fridge. My three favourite foods are hamburgers, oysters and cupcakes. I've got a couple of favourite places for burgers - Lucky 7 and Byron, both in west London. A lot of restaurants do that ciabatta thing using their burgers but I like a good cheap bun with delicious meat.
Wedding
I got married in my lunch hour on a Friday the 13th last year because it was the only real day that people may find that we were both free. We had such a frantic year that we couldn't face the possibility of a large wedding. I wore an extremely non-traditional red wedding dress (pictured). We visited the register office with my sister, dad, mother-in-law and son, after which Chris and I got about the Eurostar to Paris for 2 days. We stayed at the Ritz. It was perfect. But we've got in several challenge with friends.
