armchairs and students,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
But if you were at the Bob only to see basketball, you missed out on a great deal. One of my favorite parts of a high school basketball game is the introductions. I like to see what routines the starters have worked out with the substitute who greets them on the court. I think my favorite is when the sub frisks the starter.
I enjoy the student sections,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too. On Sunday, Sanford,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Concord and Howard seemed to produce the largest contingents of students. There were no problems, just some good-natured chants going back and forth. Sanford and Concord can battle each other in the stands on Wednesday as the teams will meet in one of the semifinals.
Along with the players' amazing athletic abilities, they also produce some amazing sights that are not related to baskets. I'm not sure how many different color sneakers were on the floor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it was many more than the uniform colors. There were orange, yellow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], blue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], purple,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], red and even a few pink.
Then there are the fans. I don't know how many coaches were in the stands,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it was a considerable number. Most of the unofficial coaches were ignored,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but on a few occasions I noticed a player having a short conversation with someone in the second row.
There were referees, too. Sitting on press row,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you can hear all the armchair officials calling traveling, fouls, illegal screens, holds - any rules violation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], someone in the stands will see it. The old sports adage says that the best referees are the ones no one notices. I can say that of the 12 men who worked Sunday's games, none of them really stands out to me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so apparently they did a good job. The refs in the stands, well, I'm not so sure.
So if you like enthusiastic students sections,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sneakers that match Joseph's amazing technicolor dreamcoat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coaches sitting next to you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], referees all around you - and some pretty darn good basketball - head to Newark this week.
